Among them are the map of the Federation from page T and the phasers from page T The following appearances of the ships all adhere to the same pattern: One screen depicts an upper half of a page, the next one the according lower half. The first ship images in the sequence are the ones from page T "Fleet Ship Classifications". Here we can easily spot the Constitution class from the upper half of the page. The Federation-class dreadnought, however, whose dashed hull outline can be found above the Constitution on the same page is unrecognizable.
Both ships are identifiable on our screen caps. Page T about the Constitution class is the first in a line of reproduced pages that depict three views of one ship class at a time.
Once again, we are first shown the upper half with the Constitution's top view and then the lower half with the side and fore views. The next page with images in the SFTM is T about the Saladin class, and we can see the according page reproduced on the screen. If we compare the following screen caps with those of the Saladin, we can see that an unrecognizable text fragment is missing between the heading and the top view of the vessel. The phaser bank is the only obvious difference between the two classes.
Likewise, in the "particulars" about the Saladin class in the SFTM there is one more line which can be verified in a comparison of the two screen caps of the lower halves. This correspondence confirms that both ships, the Saladin and the Hermes, appear on screen. The depiction of the Ptolemy class on the monitors follows the usual pattern yet again. It is worth mentioning that the individual page T about the Federation-class dreadnought is not among the pages that were rendered on the computer screens.
Its success hinted at the brand's great potential, and within a year of its publication Paramount and Roddenberry contracted to begin work on a Star Trek movie. The book was culled for background imagery in the first three Trek films. Elements from the manual that appear on screen include:. Trek Creative Wiki Explore. Wiki Content. That all started with this book, and with the equally invaluable Star Trek Blueprints by the same author. Compiled by illustrator Franz Joseph in the early s, the first true Star Trek reference book offers schematics of the Starship Enterprise, equipment, weapons, and other devices, Starfleet and Federation insignia, organizational charts, uniforms, stellar navigational charts, even the Articles of Federation and the peace treaty between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.
I happen to have the original hardcover printing from Feeling nostalgic, I pulled it off the shel Compiled by illustrator Franz Joseph in the early s, the first true Star Trek reference book offers schematics of the Starship Enterprise, equipment, weapons, and other devices, Starfleet and Federation insignia, organizational charts, uniforms, stellar navigational charts, even the Articles of Federation and the peace treaty between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.
Feeling nostalgic, I pulled it off the shelf recently and was fascinated by the level of detail, especially the inclusion of such devices as Uhura's ear receiver, the Heartbeat Reader, Universal Translator, the Tri-Dimensional Chess Set, and the Vulcan Lyrette! I'd forgotten just how much was packed into this book. All told, it's a tremendous effort that began partly as a labor of love and partly as a challenge when Joseph was allegedly dissatisfied by many of the fan-made models and props of the time.
For me, it was a "trek" back to a simpler and more celebratory time in Trek fandom. Dec 14, Wetdryvac Wetdryvac rated it it was amazing. This is what I thought of because this is what I read first, and this did it better - with NASA running some really good competition.
This thing's a bloody masterpiece, and got me into graphic design in a way nothing i'd seen previously even approached. A beautiful example of how a tie-in book should be produced. It has lavish illustrations, explains and expands the material it seeks to illuminate and comes with a handy, in-universe reason for existing. Wonderful fun if you happen to enjoy this sort of thing, which I do.

This book was good for it's time, and I'm grateful because if this hadn't started the trend back in the s then we wouldn't have all the great Star Trek books we do today. Only interesting to a collector nowadays though Mar 06, David Leemon rated it really liked it. I remember long hours spent paging through this book. One minor complaint -- everything was obviously based on the NCC Nov 08, David Runyon rated it it was amazing.
Although definitely no longer reflective of the Star Trek canon, this book has some fantastic early Trek background material. Jun 09, Commander Kolarch rated it it was amazing. This is Canon!!! May 14, R. I'm not a Trekkie; I don't know why I checked this out of the library ish , other than the schematic drawings of the starship, Enterprise.
And I'd completely forgotten it until a used copy popped up in a local bookshop. Also, hey: great excuse to post a songlink to one of R. Oct 25, Schreck rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Trekkers and Nerds. Shelves: star-trek , favorites , science-fiction. When I was a youngin I was and still am obsessed with Star Trek.
This along with the TNG Technical Manual were obsessions I poured over endlessly studying every detail I could find and expanding my useless knowledge to levels never before seen.
Apr 29, N. Eric rated it it was amazing. So good. Had this as a kid. Just got a first edition copy from in April Love the slipcover missing from later edition. Not canon, but back then it was to me and I still love to look back at the designs from TOS.
So glad I have it in my library again. Feb 20, Book collector rated it liked it Shelves: star-trek-original-series. This is what it is It's okay but one for the fans really. Nothing wrong with that though and fans will find this fascinating.
